UP Police Constable

The Uttar Pradesh Police, often abbreviated as UP Police, is the law enforcement agency of the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh headquartered in Prayagraj. The Uttar Pradesh Police is headed by a director general of police (DGP) ranked IPS officer. The current DG of Uttar Pradesh Police is Om Prakash Singh.

UP police is the largest police force in the world. It was formed in 1863 as the Office of the Inspector General of Police, United Provinces under the Police Act, 1861. Uttar police is the governed by Department of Home and Confidential of Uttar Pradesh Shashan.

A Director General of Police (DGP) heads the state police. He is assisted by many police officers. State police headquarters is situated in Lucknow.

Job Profile and Vacancies of UP Police Constable

The Police Stations are manned by officers of the rank of Sub-Inspectors, Assistant Sub-Inspectors. Head Constables and Constables both in Law and Order duties as well as investigation and the Incharge of the Police Station is an officer of the rank of Inspector or Sub-Inspector. The job of Police officers includes a various duties to fulfill, among them some are as follows:- 

  1. Registration of FIR/NCR
  2. Investigation of the cases, arrest of the accused, recovery of stolen property, challaning of the cases and prosecution.
  3. Recording report regarding missing persons and children and tracing them.
  4. Verification of servants/ chowkidars and tenants and registration of security agencies.
  5. Granting permission for loud-speakers, rallies, political/ religious functions.
  6. Checking of banks.
  7. Providing documents for filling claim in Motor Accident Claim Tribunal.
  8. Providing Guards for the transportation of cash, if required, as per police rules.

There are many posts that fall under a Police Hierarchal level. Exam for each posts are conducted separately, both internally (for department candidate only) and externally. A hierarchal view of these posts is:

There are two types of posts for Constable, i.e., Constable Civil Police & Constable in Reserved Territorial Armed. There are a total of 49568 vacancies, where 31360 vacancies are for Constable Civil Police and 18208 vacancies for Constable in Reserved Territorial Armed. According to categories, 24785 vacancies are for candidates of General category, 13383 vacancies are for candidates of OBC category, 10409 vacancies are for candidates of SC category and 991 vacancies are for candidates of ST category.

Eligibility Criteria for UP Police

There are a set of expected eligibility criteria that you should qualify to apply for UP Police Recruitment.

  1. Age Limit

For Male Candidates,

  • Minimum Age Limit: 18 years
  • Maximum Age Limit: 23 years

For Female Candidates,

  • Minimum Age Limit: 18 years
  • Maximum Age Limit: 26 years

Age Relaxation

  • For the candidate belonging to the Schedule Caste (SC), Schedule Tribe (ST) and Backward Class (OBC) categories, relaxation of upper age limit is of 5 years.


  1. Educational Qualification
  • 10+2 Intermediate Exam in Any Recognized Board in India.
  • Hindi / Sanskrit as a Subject in Class 10 Level.
  • Bachelor Degree in Any Stream with Hindi / Sanskrit as a Subject in Class 10 Level.

UP Police Syllabus & Exam Pattern

There are 4 phases of exam for UP Police Constable: Written Exam, Document Verification & Physical Standards Test, Physical Efficiency Test and Medical Test.

Written Exam is an Objective Based Offline Mode Exam. This exam is divided into 4 sections, of 300 marks containing 150 questions to be done in duration of 2 hours as a whole.

Physical Test is qualifying in nature. Physical Test is conducted after qualifying Written Test. It is conducted to judge physical fitness and endurance.

Medical Test is the next phase after Physical Test for selection.

UP Police Written Exam

Written Exam is an Objective Based Offline Mode Exam. This exam is divided into 4 sections, General Knowledge, Numerical Ability, Reasoning Ability and General Hindi, of 300 marks containing 150 questions to be done in duration of 2 hours as a whole.

UP Police Document Verification and Physical Standard Test

UP Police Physical Efficiency Test

Candidates found successful in scrutiny of documents and physical standard test will be expected to appear in physical efficiency test which will be of qualifying in nature.

Those candidates who do not complete the race within the prescribed time will not be eligible for further recruitment. Detailed procedure for physical efficiency test will be determined by the board.



UP Police Medical Test

  • Merit List will be declared as per marks obtained Written Exam and PMT.
  • Candidate should be free from any physical defeat.
  • Candidate must be in good mental and physical condition.
  • Candidate should posses high color vision.
  • Candidate should be without wearing glasses, and the minimum distant vision should be 6/6 and 6/9 of two eyes without correction.
  • Candidate must not have knock knee, flat foot, varicose vein or squint in eyes.
