Staff Selection Commission conducts an annual exam to recruit Junior Engineers. SSC JE works in departments like Central Water Commission, Central Public Works Department, Military Engineering Services and Department of Posts. The recruitment for SSC JE is carried out for Group ‘B’ Officer posts in Electrical, Civil, Mechanical, Quantity Surveying and Contract Divisions. SSC has recently announced total 1601 vacancies under different Government Organizations for Junior Engineer (JE) Posts. SSC JE exam are conducted all over India and in online mode only.

Eligibility Criteria for SSC – JE

Staff Selection Commission conducts JE examination every year for the posts of Junior Engineers in various disciplines. Candidates are recruited for the post of Junior Engineer Group ‘B’ Non- gazetted posts by the commission. Candidates must satisfy the eligibility criteria to apply for SSC JE.

  1. Age Limit
  • Minimum Age Limit: 18 years
  • Maximum Age Limit: 32 years

Age Relaxation

  • SC/ ST : 5 years
  • OBC : 3 years
  • Physically Handicapped : 10 years
  • Physically Handicapped + OBC : 13 years
  • Physically Handicapped + SC/ ST : 15 years
  1. Educational Qualification

Candidate applying for SSC – JE should be aware of the required educational qualification. The SSC Exam authority require minimum of diploma in Civil/ Electrical/ Mechanical to apply for SSC – JE. Different educational certificates are required for different posts.

Check the following points to know the post- wise eligibility criteria which are given below:

  • Junior Engineer (CPWD) – Candidate must have diploma/ degree in Civil/ Electrical/ Mechanical from a recognized university.
  • Junior Engineer (DoP) – Candidate must have a three year full diploma in Civil Engineering from a Central/ State Government recognized institution.
  • Junior Engineer (MES) – Candidate must have a full time diploma/ degree in Civil/ Electrical/ Mechanical Engineering from a recognized university with minimum two years of experience in their respective field.
  • Junior Engineer (QS & C/ MES) – Candidate should have passed 12th standard with Building and Quality Surveying sub divisional – II from institute of surveyors. Candidates with diploma/ degree in Civil Engineering are eligible for this post.
  • Junior Engineer (CWC) – Diploma/ degree in Civil/ Mechanical Engineering.
  • Junior Engineer in Farrakka Bridge Project – Diploma/ degree in Electrical/ Mechanical Engineering.
  • Junior Engineer (CWPRS) – Three years full time diploma in Civil/ Electrical Engineering from a recognized university.
  • Junior Engineer, DTE of Quality Assurance Naval (Electrical) – Candidate must have three years full time diploma Electrical Engineering from any recognized institution with minimum two years of experience in their respective field, including knowledge of various standard and their interpretation.
  • Junior Engineer, DTE of Quality Assurance Naval (Mechanical) – Three years full time diploma in Mechanical Engineering. Minimum two years’ work experience in testing of marine engineering propulsion systems including turbines, power generation equipment, hydraulic system, refrigeration, pumps values/ field quality assurance/ quality control/ production/ manufacturing etc. including knowledge of various standards and their interpretation.

SSC – JE Syllabus & Exam Pattern

SSC conducts JE exam in two phases of Tier 1 and Tier 2.

Tier 1 is Objective Based Online Mode Exam, contains questions paper of 200 marks to be done in 2 hours of duration. Paper 1 consists of three sections of General Intelligence, General Awareness and General Engineering (Civil/Mechanical/Electrical). 

Tier 2 is Multiple Choice Questions (MCQ) Based Offline Mode (Pen and Paper) Exam, contains a question paper of 300 marks to be completed in 2 hours. It contains the questions based on General Eng. (civil & structural), (Electrical) or (Mechanical) as per candidates choice.

SSC conducts exam for Junior Engineer in 2 phases: Tier – 1 and Tier – 2.


SSC JE Tier – 1/Prelims


Tier 1 is Objective Based Online Exam, which is of 2 hours and contains 200 marks.

Tier 1 Exam consists of 3 sections:-

  1. General Intelligence
  2. General Awareness
  3. General Engineering (Civil/Mechanical/Electrical)

Section A and section B are compulsory for each candidate. In section 3 candidates have to make choice for the subject from Civil/Mechanical/Electrical Engineering.

Section A and B consist of 50 marks each. This section checks the candidate’s ability and knowledge of general reasoning and awareness. Section C consists of 100 marks and checks candidate’s knowledge for the subject chosen from Civil/ Mechanical/ Electrical.

SSC JE Tier 2/ Mains

Tier 2 is MCQ Based Offline Mode (Pen and Paper) Exam. Candidates have to attend a question paper of 300 marks in 2 hours. Tier II is a convenient type exam, candidate have to choose the subject from General Engineering (Civil & Structural/ Electrical/ Mechanical).
