Staff Selection Commission – Combined Graduate Level Examination, often referred as SSC CGL is a type of exam conducted to recruit graduates to various levels of ministries, departments and organizations of Government of India. It is conducted by the Staff Selection Commission (SSC) for selecting staffs of various groups like Group B and Group C posts. Candidates applying for the various posts need to have a bachelor's degree from a recognized university at the time of applying. This exam is offered annually in both Hindi & English languages. According to reports, approx 1.5 million exam takers appear every year for SSC CGL.

SSC- CGL Eligibility Criteria for Exam 2019

There are a set of expected eligibility criteria that you should qualify to apply for SSC - CGL Recruitment 2019.

  1. Age Limit
  • Minimum Age Limit : 18 years
  • Maximum Age Limit : 30 years

The age limits may vary depending on the position applied. For instance, the position for Inspector of Central Bureau of Narcotics which had an age range from 18 to 27 years was extended to 30 years in September 2018.

  1. ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS AS ON AUGUST 1, 2019:

i) Assistant Audit Officer/Assistant Accounts Officer:

a) Essential Qualifications: Bachelor’s Degree from a recognized University or Institute

b) Desirable Qualifications: Chartered Accountant or cost & Management Accountant or Company Secretary or Masters, Commerce or Masters in Business Studies or Masters in Business Administration (Finance) or Masters in Business Economics.

ii) Junior Statistical Officer: Bachelor’s Degree in any subject from a recognized University or Institute with at least 60% Marks in Mathematics at 12th standard level or Bachelor’s Degree in any subject with Statistics as one of the subjects at degree level.

iii) All other Posts: Bachelor’s Degree from a recognized University or equivalent.

The candidates appearing in the final year of their graduation can also apply, however they must possess Essential qualification on or before August 1, 2019.

Posts falling under SSC - CGL

At the time of filling up the SSC CGL online application form, you are asked to fill the SSC CGL post preferences. You are aware of some common SSC CGL Posts like the Income Tax Inspector, Assistant in CBI etc. Every post is assigned with a post code which can be an alphabet and a special character, for example, for the post of Assistant Audit Officer Group “B” Gazetted (Non Ministerial) post code is F, and these types of other post codes are assigned to different posts.

SSC CGL 2019 Selection Process & Structure

The examination has several Tiers which are conducted over different days with results posted after each Tier. Previous exams also included an interview tier, but following a government order, interviews have been dispensed off for all non-gazetted posts in the central government as of 1 January 2016. A computer proficiency test or a skill test was also added as a Tier for some posts. There are four major tiers for the 2019 exam.

Tier 1: Preliminary

The Tier 1 exam consists of a written objective multiple-choice exam with four sections, covering the subjects of:

  • General Intelligence and Reasoning
  • General Awareness
  • Quantitative Aptitude
  • English Comprehension

The exam was typically scored with maximum 50 Marks per section for a total of 200 Marks. The latest versions of this exam such as with 2018 have been conducted online.

Based on results from Tier I, qualified candidates can then take the Tier II and Tier III exams.


Tier 2: Mains Exam

Also known as the Mains Exam, the Tier 2 exam consists of written objective multiple-choice exam, in four sections (also called "Papers"), covering the subjects of:

  • Quantitative Aptitude
  • English Language and Comprehension
  • Statistics
  • General Studies, which is subdivided into:
    • Finance & Accounting
    • Economics & Governance.

The exam was typically scored with maximum 200 Marks per section. Most positions required the candidate to take only the first two sections (Paper-I: Quantitative Aptitude, Paper-II: English Language and Comprehension), but certain positions require the third or fourth section. The latest versions of this exam such as the 2018 edition have been conducted online.


Tier 3 exam: Descriptive Paper

An offline exam in which candidates have to do writing in the form of essay writing and letter writing, and sometimes precise and application writing. The exam can be done in English or Hindi.



Tier 4 exam: Data Entry Skill Test / Computer Proficiency Test

In 2016, a fourth tier was added with two possible exams depending on the positions applied:

  • Data Entry Speed Test (DEST): candidates enter data at the rate of 2000 key presses in 15 minutes. This is mainly for positions such as Tax Assistant. (Central Excise & Income Tax)
  • Computer Proficiency Test (CPT): covering the topics of word processingspreadsheets, and making slides.

Other exams

Other exams are required for certain positions. The types included:

  • Personality Test / Interview (discontinued starting 2016)
  • Physical Endurance Test / Medical Examination for Central Police Organization (CPO)

SSC-CGL Syllabus & Exam Pattern

The SSC – CGL consists of four phase, where each phase needs to be cleared depending on the requirement of different posts. SSC – CGL exam will be conducted in four tiers, i.e, Tier-1, Tier- 2, Tier- 3 and Tier- 4.

  • Tier –1 objective exam will be of 60 minutes duration in online mode which consists of 100 questions for 200 marks.
  • Tier –2 objective exam, also conducted in online mode, will consist of 4 papers; each paper will be of 120 minutes duration with 200 marks for each subject. No. of questions will remain 100 for Quantitative Abilities, Statistics and General Studies but for English Language & Comprehension, no. of questions will increase to 200.
  • Tier – 3 descriptive exams will be of 60 minutes duration in offline mode, i.e., pen and paper mode which is of 100 marks.
  • Tier – 4 Exam comprises of a couple of skill tests which are required for certain government posts and document verification procedure.

SSC CGL 2019 Tier – 1

SSC–CGL Tier – 1 is an objective examination which will be conducted online. The exam comprises of 4 sections, which consists of 25 questions and 50 marks for each.

SSC CGL 2019 Tier – 2

SSC–CGL is also an objective exam which is conducted online. In Tier – 2, each exam is of 2 hours and consists of 100 questions, except English Language & Comprehension, which is of 200 questions. Each section is of 200 marks.

SSC CGL 2019 Tier – 3

Tier – 3 is a descriptive writing exam, in which there is essay writing, letter writing, etc. The exam is of 100 marks in duration of 60 minutes. It can be done either in English or in Hindi language.
